Two Panes Are More Secure Than One
Single-glazed windows are one of the most accessible entry points in any Melbourne home. A standard 3mm or 4mm pane of glass offers minimal resistance to impact and can be broken quickly and quietly.
The most immediate security benefit of a double glazed window comes from its straightforward design as breaking through two panes of glass requires significantly more force, more time, and more noise than breaking a single pane. Opportunistic intruders rely on speed and silence and the additional resistance of a double glazed unit can be a significant deterrent.
Toughened Safety Glass
Our LightBridge/Optitherm and LightBridge Next/Optitherm Hush units use toughened safety glass on both panes. Toughened glass is approximately four to five times stronger than standard float glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it shatters into small, relatively harmless fragments rather than large dangerous shards, meeting Australian Grade A Safety Glass standards.
Laminated Glass: The Highest Level of Security
For homeowners where security is a priority, our LightBridge Next/Optitherm Hush units offer the strongest protection available in a standard double glazed unit. The outer pane is a 6.5mm VLam Hush acoustic laminate, constructed with a specialist interlayer bonded between two sheets of glass.
When impacted, the interlayer holds the glass together even after it has cracked, preventing the pane from shattering and maintaining a barrier to entry. This is the same principle used in automotive windscreens and security glazing, and it makes forced entry through a window significantly more difficult, time-consuming, and noisy.
More Secure, More Comfortable, More Efficient
Security is one of several benefits that come with retrofit double glazing. The same installation that makes your windows harder to break also reduces heat loss by up to 75%, cuts external noise by up to 70% and is more energy efficient and sustainable.
