Retrofit Double Glazing Install Day Plan
Your double glazing install is approaching, and so here's all you need to know to ensure a seamless install.
1. ARRIVAL TIME
We depart our factory in Thornbury at approximately 7am, and will arrive between 7:30am-8:00am for Metro Melbourne. Please ensure you are available to give access to your home.
2. PETS AND CHILDREN
We will be working with sharp glass, power tools, nail guns and heavy lifts; so it’s best to keep furry friends and little ones out of harm's way for the day.
3. ACCESS FOR VEHICLES
Ensure there is close parking for a large van. Your glass will be delivered on a specialist side-loading glass truck. Please keep your driveway clear, we will unload this and store it safely.
4. ACCESS AROUND WINDOWS
Please clear a 1m x 1m space, both inside and outside, around each window.
Please remove window coverings (curtains, blinds, fly screens, external blinds, shutters) and move couches, lamps etc out of the way, and rugs off the floor. We don’t want anything to get damaged or trip over anything!
For outside, remove pot plants, rubble, etc. Safety is priority one for our teams, whilst we will take our best care not to damage garden beds and plants, this may be unavoidable if they are close to the windows.
5. OTHER TRADES
Please don’t organise other trades while we’re on-site - we require full clear access to carry sharp glass safely through your home. If other trades impede/ delay our install we may have to charge you for the delay or reschedule.
6. ORDER OF INSTALL
If you would like us to install a certain room first (for example, an office where you are working) just let us know on the day and we would be happy to accommodate this.
7. WORK AREA
There is a lot of carpentry activity during installation - loud noises, dust and broken glass! We request an area of 3m x 3m close to the windows. A garage, carport or pergola works great. If you don’t have this available, please notify us so we can work out other arrangements. We will use drop sheets around the window frames to protect your floor and of course we will clean-up the mess once we have finished.
8. YOUR SAFETY
Please keep a safe distance from our work spaces as power tools and broken glass can cause serious injury.
For DIY-Assist jobs where you are involved in the installation, you will need the correct PPE including; cut resistant gloves, fully covered arms and legs, steel cap boots, hearing protection and safety glasses.
9. GLASS STORAGE AREA
Depending on the number of panels installed, we will need a sturdy wall to stage the glass panels against. Please clear an area and a pathway to it.
10. RUBBISH AND WASTE REMOVAL
All old glass and beading will be removed by us. It’s typical for old glass to break during the install process, and we use drop sheets and our industrial vacuum to clean up. We also recommend you vacuum your house after we leave to be safe.
11. PAINTING PREPARATION
Windows will be finished to a standard ready for your finishing trades. There will likely be some light cosmetic scratches on the frame, gap sealing and caulking may be desired. Please note, we do not perform painting or caulking services as these are separate trades. For warranty purposes beading and capping should be painted within 12 weeks of installation.
12. REPLACEMENT PANELS
Sometimes we will re-order a replacement panel due to tolerance limits that are encountered during the installation process. For example frames not being exactly square, concealed subframes, uncovered previous repairs, or unusual window construction. This is a normal part of the retrofit process, and generally the older the house, the more unique the frames are, and more likely to have a few panels that do not fit immediately. In this situation we will leave your existing glass in place and will return in 2-3 weeks with the replacement panels.
We don’t ask for progress payments, and your invoice is only payable once the full job is complete.
13. BROKEN PANELS
While double glazing is exceptionally strong when inside a wooden frame, the toughened glass corners are very fragile and prone to breakage during the install process. If this occurs, we’ll order another panel and schedule another day to complete the install.
YOUR PRE-INSTALL CHECKLIST
- Pets and kids safely away for the day
- Street access for a side-loading glass truck
- A wide, clear path from the street to a glass storage area
- A 3mx3m work space, where broken glass, noise and dust are okay
- Power available on the site
- Windows have a 1m x 1m clear space, inside and outside
- No pot plants, prized plants, or tripping hazards on the outside of windows
- Window Coverings removed (curtains, blinds, flyscreens, etc)
- Exterior blinds, shades etc taken down
- Painter / Caulker organised (optional)
- Your calendar free at the competition time
WHAT OUR INSTALLERS CAN’T DO
The health and safety of our install team is very important to us. As such they are not permitted to do the following:
- Remove safety boots (double glazing is heavy and can crush or cut toes!)
- Painting
- Caulking
- General maintenance
- Additional tasks not on the accepted quote
- Removal of doors, window bars, plantation shutters or fixtures for access
WHAT OUR INSTALLERS CAN DO
With your written approval for an additional cost of $125/hr + materials
- Repair timber rot in window frames - structural rot cannot be repaired
- Fix up existing poorly hung doors or windows
- Remove most, but not all, window coverings such as a shutter or blind
- Replacing common inoperable window hardware (winders, locks and latches), if they are not already on your quote
TIMBER ROT REPAIR
If we encounter timber rot during the installation process, generally we can repair this on site for $125/hr. However, we cannot determine the full extent until we begin this process. Whilst rare, if the extent of rot is structural, then we may not be able to retrofit the frame. In this case, we’ll work out what the best course of action is and get your approval before proceeding.
COMPLETION
When all the panels are installed, we will walk around and inspect each panel with you. We clean the windows with a solvent to remove any excess silicone, but some may remain on beading; this is normal and is typically removed by your painter in surface preparation. Likewise the solvent can leave a light film that is visible under certain conditions.
While we often install when you are not home, we require you to be present for the final sign-off so we can show you the operation of your new windows. Please note, if you are not around to inspect and sign-off and you later request a call-back, then a call back fee will be payable.
